GEO/AIO for ChatGPT and other LLMs: how to build visibility from the beginning

What GEO/AIO is, how the visibility changes in ChatGPT, Google AI, Copilot and Claude, and what a company can do to be found, understood and cited.

GEO and AIO strategy connecting a brand with ChatGPT, Google AI, Copilot and Claude
GEO/AIO expands SEO work so that a brand can be discovered, understood and cited in search and response experiences with artificial intelligence.

In brief

Key ideas

  • GEO/AIO does not replace SEO: it extends its technical, semantic and authority base to the generative experiences.
  • Each platform discovers and presents the information in a different way; there is no single tactic or special marking to ensure that it appears.
  • The useful work combines crawling and indexing, clear entities, expert content, evidence, structured data, authority and measurement.
  • Starting early allows you to build a learning and measuring base before the channel matures, but it does not guarantee citations or positions.

Search no longer means just writing a few words on Google and going through a list of links. More and more people pose a complete need to ChatGPT, consult a synthesis generated by Google, compare options with Copilot or ask Claude to investigate current information on the web.

In this environment, a company can be visible in several ways: as a link, as a source cited, as a recognizable entity or as one of the options that help build an answer. This evolution opens up a new discipline known as GEO - Generative Engine Optimization - or AIO — AI Optimization.

The name is new; much of the serious work is not. An accessible, well-structured, useful, updated and supported web based on experience remains the basis. The difference is in expanding the focus: in addition to positioning a page for a consultation, we must get different systems to understand what the brand does, what it is expert, what evidence it provides and when its content is relevant.

In Sitelicon we integrate SEO and GEO/AIO in a single visibility strategy. There are not two services disconnected or a collection of tricks to “like” an AI.

What are GEO and AIO

GEO and AIO group practices to improve an organization’s ability to be found, understood and considered as a source by search engines and systems that generate responses by artificial intelligence.

The traditional SEO usually works crawling, indexing, relevance, page experience and authority to get visibility in search results. GEO/AIO takes advantage of the same base and adds specific questions:

  • Is the company’s entity, its products, services, people and markets clearly defined?
  • Can a system identify concrete claims and relate them to reliable evidence?
  • Does the content answer real questions with enough context and depth?
  • Is there coherence between the web, profiles, publications and other external sources?
  • Can it be determined when information was published or updated?
  • Does architecture help connect topics, services, cases and resources?

There is no “ChatGPT position” button. There is also no single index shared by all models. Each platform combines models, search systems, suppliers, crawling rules and different presentation criteria. Therefore GEO/AIO should be understood as a discipline of preparation, quality and continuous learning, not a promise of inclusion.

How the visibility works in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can search the web when a question needs current information and show quotes and links to the sources used. OpenAI explains that any public site can appear in ChatGPT Search, but for the content to be included in summaries, fragments and citations should be allowed access to OAI-SearchBot.

This makes the technical configuration the first control. robots.txt, server rules, CDN, firewall and possible IP-address blockages. We also differentiate OAI-SearchBot, related to the search, from GPTBot, which corresponds to preferences about possible training. Allowing one does not require to allow the other.

Editorial accessibility matters as much as crawlability. A system must be able to determine which question resolves a page, what claims it contains, who publishes them and how they relate to the rest of the site. Clear titles, descriptive sections, dates, authorship, sources, canonical and internal links reduce ambiguity.

OpenAI also indicates that ChatGPT can reformulate a query and send it to one or more search providers. This means that visibility does not depend exclusively on a crawler: a good presence in the general search ecosystem remains relevant. In addition, the links from ChatGPT incorporate utm_source=chatgpt.com, so part of the traffic referred to can be measured in Google Analytics.

The position is never guaranteed. OpenAI points out that the results are ordered by multiple factors designed to find relevant and reliable information. Our work improves the conditions of discovery and understanding; the final selection belongs to the external system.

Google AI: GEO continues to rely on SEO

Google is especially explicit: its generative search functions are based on the main positioning and quality systems. ground or RAG to recover index pages and can perform several related searches -Query fan-out- before building an answer.

For a page to appear in these experiences, it must first be traceable, indexed and fit to be shown with a fragment. Therefore, technical health, architecture, useful content and authority remain essential.

Google also disassembles some myths. It does not require a file llms.txta special marking for AI or artificially fragment each text. Structured data remain useful within a general SEO strategy, but there is no type of schema.org which ensures that it appears in a generative response.

The most consistent recommendation is to create its own, expert and difficult to replace with a generic summary: real experience, data, justified comparisons, processes, cases, images and conclusions that provide a recognizable perspective.

Copilot and Bing: a more visible layer of measurement

Microsoft has incorporated a report from Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance that shows quotes from pages of a site in Copilot, general summaries of Bing and some associated integrations. You can report total quotes, cited pages, trends and a sample of queries used to recover content.

It is an important evolution because it adds observability. Still, Microsoft clarifies that a quote does not amount to position, authority or importance within a response. The metric must be interpreted along with traffic, interaction and conversion.

The XML sitemap, a lastmod precise, Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow to report high, change or deletion. These signals facilitate discovery and freshness, but also do not guarantee that a URL is cited.

Claude can use web search to base a response with current information. Anthropic explains that it processes several sources and presents direct quotes and links for the user to verify them. The principle is similar, although the infrastructure and the specific criteria do not have to match ChatGPT, Google or Bing.

This is one of the particular features of GEO/AIO: the objective is not to adapt a page to a single known algorithm, but to build solid digital assets that can work in different recovery mechanisms. Semantic clarity, source quality, current and entity consistency are more sustainable than any specific short-term tactic.

What we work for a GEO/AIO service

Our service is part of an audit and becomes a continuous implementation and learning program.

1. Access, tracking and indexation

We check that authorized search engines and crawlers can access the important content. robots.txt, metadata noindex, canonical, sitemap, redirects, status codes, rendering, performance, CDN and safety rules.

2. Architecture and thematic coverage

We order services, categories, products, cases, articles and questions in connected clusters. A isolated page can solve a query; a coherent architecture allows you to understand the full experience of an organization.

3. Structured entities and data

We consistently define the company, brands, products, services, authors, locations and relationships. schema.org when appropriate and we verify that the marking coincides with the visible content. Its function is to reduce ambiguity and support interpretation, not to manipulate a response.

4. Expert and ciable content

We transform internal knowledge into useful responses: methodologies, comparisons, definitions, own data, frequent questions, documentation, cases and decision criteria. We add authorship, dates, sources and evidence. The content must first serve the person and, precisely for this reason, be understandable for the machines.

5. External authority and coherence

We analyze relevant references, links, profiles and mentions. We work a legitimate and coherent presence; not artificial mention networks or mass publications with no value.

6. Measurement and experimentation

We combine Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, web analytics, referrals from AI assistants and regular tests of consultations. We measure indexation, coverage, visibility, observable quotes, qualified traffic and conversions. Responses can vary according to the moment, model, location and context, so an isolated sampling is not a reliable KPI.

Benefits for a company

A well-implemented GEO/AIO strategy provides benefits even when a specific platform does not show a quote:

  • More brand clarity. It leads to precise definition of who the company is, what it offers and for whom it is relevant.
  • Higher quality content. It converts internal experience into useful, verifiable and reusable assets by customers, sales teams and search engines.
  • Increased coverage of the decision. It responds not only to key words, but to questions, comparisons, restrictions and cases of use.
  • Potential more informed traffic. Those who arrive after consulting a response may have made further progress in their evaluation process.
  • Better technical and semantic basis. Tracking, structure, accessibility and organized data also benefit the SEO and user experience.
  • Early learning. Early measurement allows you to discover which topics, pages and evidence are involved in new experiences.

The commercial objective should not be to accumulate uncontextual mentions. It should be to increase the likelihood of being present in relevant decisions and to convert that visibility into trust, opportunities and business.

The opportunity to start from the beginning

To enter soon does not guarantee a permanent advantage. Systems evolve, sources change and metrics are still maturing. The opportunity is to build before the assets that require more time: published knowledge, authority, entity coherence, architecture, editorial processes and a base line of measurement.

A company that starts now can learn what questions its customers ask, what pages are recovered, what information gaps exist and how the journey to conversion changes. When the generative search is more competitive, that accumulated learning will be more difficult to improvise.

The prudent strategy is to start with a specific scope: to select services or priority categories, to audit their coverage, to correct the technical basis, to create expert content and to measure a stable set of consultations and results. Then, what is shown is expanded.

SEO and GEO/AIO must move forward together

Generative search does not make SEO unnecessary. It makes it wider. Without crawling there is no discovery; without architecture there is no context; without own content there is no differentiated source; without authority it costs to generate confidence; without measurement there is no learning.

Sitelicon has been working on digital visibility since 2005 and applies this experience to the new ecosystem of responses with AI. We combine strategy, content, web development, structured data, analytical and continuous improvement so that each change can be implemented and measured.

If you want to know how your company appears today in ChatGPT and other systems, what blocks exist and what content should be prioritized, we can start with a SEO + GEO/AIO audit and turn its conclusions into an executable road map.
