Google AI Mode: how generative search changes SEO

What Google AI Mode meant for search and how to adapt content, data and measurement to generative queries.

A complex Google query connected to content, structured data and authority
Generative search broadens queries while still relying on accessible, useful and trustworthy pages.

In brief

Key ideas

  • Google rolled out AI Mode in the US on 20 May 2025 with reasoning, multimodality and follow-up questions.
  • Query fan-out breaks a question into subtopics and runs multiple searches.
  • Google retained its foundations: original content, page experience, crawlability and matching structured data.
  • Success must include conversions, awareness and visit quality—not rankings and clicks alone.

In May 2025 Google made generative search a far more visible part of Search. On 20 May it announced the US rollout of AI Mode, with reasoning, multimodality and follow-up questions. The next day Google published guidance for site owners.

The SEO message was clear: the query experience was changing, but crawlable, useful and reliable websites still mattered. Brands now needed to be found, understood, cited and chosen.

From keyword to investigation

AI Mode lets users explain context and constraints. Google’s query fan-out breaks a question into subtopics, runs several searches and assembles relevant information. A page can contribute a definition, comparison, technical fact, proof point or specialist answer inside a broader investigation—not only rank for one exact phrase.

What does not change

Google said its established guidance still applied. Create original, satisfying content for people. Ensure Googlebot can access a successful page, keep the main content in indexable HTML, provide a clear cross-device experience, use internal links to reveal relationships and make structured data match visible content.

There is no special tag that guarantees inclusion in AI Mode. Technical shortcuts do not replace quality or topical authority.

What should evolve

Generative queries reward nuance. Organise topics around real questions: what it is, when it fits, how it is implemented, risks, comparisons and evidence. Clear structure, identified entities, authors, dates, sources and first-hand examples make content easier to assess and reuse.

GEO/AIO does not replace SEO. It extends it towards understanding and citation in generative systems while sharing the same technical and editorial foundations.

Conversational product discovery

Google connected AI Mode with its Shopping Graph and shopping assistance. Ecommerce visibility therefore depends on product data as much as editorial copy. Price, availability, variants, specifications, images, shipping and returns should align across the page, Merchant Center and structured data. Explain who a product is for and what problem it solves.

Measure beyond a single metric

Generative answers may satisfy part of a need before a click. CTR alone cannot describe the outcome. Review query and page trends, branded demand, conversions, assisted sales, visit quality and thematic coverage. Controlled manual checks can reveal citation patterns, but variable AI answers are samples, not guaranteed rankings.

Sitelicon combines technical auditing, entity and question mapping, original content, catalogue consistency and business measurement in its SEO + GEO/AIO work. AI Mode did not call for indiscriminate publishing; it called for a presence that systems can interpret and people can trust.
