AI search creates more complex queries: how to earn higher-quality clicks
What changes when people ask more detailed questions and how to build content that earns visibility, trust and purposeful visits.
In brief
Key ideas
- Google said in August 2025 that AI was driving more queries and higher-quality clicks.
- Generative queries include context, constraints and follow-up questions.
- Pages need depth, evidence and a next step that a summary cannot replace.
- CTR and traffic should be interpreted with conversion, retention and branded demand.
On 6 August 2025 Google published its initial view of the effect of AI Overviews and AI Mode. It said people were searching more, total organic click volume to the web was relatively stable and the average quality of clicks had increased slightly—quality meaning visitors did not immediately return to Search.
Those are Google’s own figures and should be treated accordingly, but they point to a strategic change. If an AI answer handles the basics before the visit, a visitor who continues expects more. The page must offer a reason to proceed.
From two words to a complete need
Traditional search encouraged short queries. In a conversational interface, users can explain their situation, objective, budget, constraints and preferences, then refine them. AI Mode explores subtopics and brings sources together.
This multiplies demand combinations. A business cannot publish one page for every phrase, but it can organise knowledge into reusable components: definitions, criteria, comparisons, cases, risks, costs, processes and evidence.
What earns a click after the answer?
A summary may define a service. It is less able to replace a calculator, configurator, current catalogue, detailed case, original data or assessment of a specific situation. These assets create a reason to visit.
Strong content provides a direct answer, easy structure, first-hand experience, verifiable examples, authorship, dates and sources. Tables and tools support decisions; internal links offer the right depth; the next action matches the user’s intent.
Optimisation should not conceal the answer to force a click. It should resolve the first question and demonstrate that the page can support the next one.
Machine-readable and human-useful offers
Ecommerce queries combine use, compatibility, material, delivery and budget. Incomplete catalogues force systems to infer. Complete attributes, clear variants, availability, images, policies and consistent structured data improve understanding.
Service pages should explain scope, process, requirements, deliverables and situations where the service is not suitable. Precision reduces irrelevant traffic and increases confidence among people who do need it.
Measure quality without abandoning volume
A lower CTR does not automatically mean worse performance, just as more sessions do not guarantee more business. Track conversions and value per organic visit, time to action, repeat visits, branded demand, qualified leads, assisted sales and the contribution of content to the journey.
Controlled checks in generative systems can reveal citation patterns, but answers vary by time, location and context. They are samples, not guaranteed rankings.
SEO and GEO/AIO share foundations
Google reiterated that there is no special markup for its AI experiences. Crawlability, useful content, experience, internal links and matching structured data remain the foundation. GEO/AIO extends the work towards entities, citation and thematic coverage rather than replacing SEO.
Sitelicon connects both disciplines with commercial measurement. The objective is not empty mentions or clicks, but people arriving with more context and finding a sufficiently strong answer to move forward.
