Context
E-commerce has experienced great growth worldwide in recent years, and Colombia is no exception. The South American country has a population of more than 50 million people, of whom approximately 66% are Internet users. These numbers make e-commerce in Colombia has great potential, and local and foreign companies are beginning to realize.
In Colombia, e-commerce is at an accelerated stage of growth. According to a study by the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce, online sales in the country increased by 25% in 2020, reaching 22.3 billion Colombian pesos (about $5.9 billion), which shows that e-commerce is a constantly expanding industry and has great potential in the country.
One of the factors that has driven the growth of e-commerce in Colombia is the increase in the use of mobile devices. More and more Colombians have access to the Internet through their mobile phones, leading to an increase in demand for mobile applications and optimized mobile device websites.
Another important factor that has driven e-commerce in Colombia is the adoption of online payment platforms. E-commerce companies are increasingly adopting these platforms, which facilitates the payment process for customers and reduces the risk of fraud. The main online payment platforms in Colombia include MercadoPago, PayU, PayPal and PSE.
In addition, the Colombian government has taken measures to promote e-commerce in the country. In 2020, the Digital Economy Act was implemented, which seeks to promote the use of digital technologies in the country and to establish a regulatory framework for e-commerce. The law also includes measures to protect users’ personal data and combat online fraud.
However, despite the growth of e-commerce in Colombia, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed, one of which is logistics, as the country still has limitations in terms of transport and distribution infrastructure. In addition, the lack of confidence in online purchases remains a problem, as some consumers still lack confidence in online websites and payment systems.
