Amazon introduces generative AI for product titles and descriptions
Amazon introduced generative tools in September 2023 to create listings from a short description. What they offered and how to retain quality and control.
In brief
Key ideas
- Amazon announced generative features for creating product titles, features and descriptions in Seller Central on 13 September 2023.
- Sellers could enter a few words or sentences and review the proposed content before submitting it to the catalogue.
- Automation reduces initial effort but does not guarantee accuracy, compliance or differentiation.
- A catalogue governed through authoritative sources, rules and human review can scale more safely.
On 13 September 2023, Amazon announced generative AI features to help sellers create product titles, bullet points and descriptions. A seller could provide a short description in a few words or sentences; Seller Central would generate content that could be reviewed, edited and submitted to the catalogue.
The feature addressed a real constraint. Complete listings take time, particularly for companies managing hundreds or thousands of references. Faster generation, however, did not remove responsibility for the published information.
From short input to a listing
Amazon’s proposed workflow was simple: enter initial product information, generate a title and description, review the draft and confirm it before publication. The seller still knew the real composition, compatibility, restrictions and promise of the product.
A fluent listing can contain an incorrect fact. AI may infer a likely feature, confuse a variation or overstate a benefit. Brand, identifiers, category, materials, measurements, compatibility, warnings, regulated claims and consistency with images all require validation.
The source determines quality
If the input is incomplete, the model has little context. If source information is inconsistent, AI may produce a polished version of the inconsistency.
A scalable operation needs an authoritative source. A PIM or approved repository holds stable attributes, while each channel receives an adaptation based on its rules. AI can enrich the content, but it should not become the catalogue’s only memory.
Complete is not the same as distinctive
When every seller uses similar generated text, listings can become interchangeable. Brands still need to decide which questions to answer, which benefits they can prove and which information reduces returns. Images, instructions, video and A+ Content remain part of the experience.
Build a quality loop
A company can test one product family and classify every correction: invented data, omitted attributes, inappropriate tone, compliance issue or poor market adaptation. Repeated findings can become validation rules.
Useful metrics include time per listing, acceptance without edits, errors caught before publication, later suppressions, conversion and returns linked to information quality. Automation should expand only when quality remains stable.
The September 2023 tool began with a few words. In March 2024, Amazon extended the approach by allowing listing creation from a brand’s website URL. Both developments point in the same direction: AI transforms existing sources into marketplace content.
Sitelicon combines Amazon management, ecommerce, PIM and integrations so that catalogues grow without losing accuracy, compliance or brand identity. AI changed the starting point; final quality still depends on data, rules and seller review.
