How to prepare an ecommerce site for AI agents

What changed when agents learned to navigate the web, and how to make an ecommerce experience understandable and safe for them.

On 23 January 2025 OpenAI introduced Operator, a research preview that could use its own browser: interpret a page and act through the same buttons, fields and menus as a person. It made an important ecommerce shift tangible. A future store visit might be assisted by an agent researching, comparing or completing part of a task.

Preparing for that scenario does not mean building a separate site for machines. It means removing ambiguity, structuring information and protecting consequential actions. These improvements overlap with accessibility, user experience, technical SEO and sound ecommerce architecture.

From a visible page to an understandable interface

A person infers that a card is a product or an icon opens the basket. An agent benefits from consistent signals. Semantic HTML, accessible names and a clear hierarchy reduce dependence on appearance.

Buttons should be real buttons, links should identify their destination, fields need associated labels and errors must be understandable. Menus and dialogs should work by keyboard, while loading and confirmation states should be communicated in the document. A robust interface serves more people and withstands new devices and navigation methods.

Product information should not require guesswork

An agent should not have to infer whether tax is included, a variant is available or a delivery promise applies. Name, brand, identifiers, variants, attributes, price, currency, stock, delivery, returns and images must be explicit and aligned across the page and internal systems.

A PIM or master source prevents contradictions between the website, marketplaces and feeds. Schema.org entities such as Product, Offer and Organization add machine-readable context, but must always match what the customer sees.

Predictable, secure checkout

A purchase has financial consequences. Every step should state what will happen, what will be charged and where it will be sent. Irreversible actions need unambiguous confirmation. Authentication, server-side authorisation, validation, anti-fraud controls and rate limits still apply; browser behaviour is not a security boundary.

OpenAI also identified prompt injection from web pages as an agent risk. External input must be treated as untrusted, permissions kept narrow and sensitive actions supervised. Public interfaces must never expose credentials, personal data or administrative functions.

Measure the new journey

Research and action may be split between a user and an agent. Track business events—availability checks, baskets, checkout starts and confirmed orders—without invasive identification. Monitor interaction errors, blocks and response times. Compatibility is demonstrated by successful tasks, not a label.

  1. Audit accessibility, semantics, performance and forms.
  2. Review catalogue quality and structured data.
  3. Test search, variants, basket and checkout end to end.
  4. Define confirmations, permissions and logs for sensitive actions.
  5. Measure outcomes and fix every loss of context.
