Google expands its reviews system: authority, experience and trust for SEO

Google's April 2023 reviews update expanded beyond products. We explain how to create comparisons and reviews that genuinely help people decide.

In brief

Key ideas

  • Google rolled out its April 2023 reviews update between 12 and 25 April.
  • The system moved beyond product reviews to cover other reviewable topics.
  • Useful reviews require demonstrable experience, criteria, evidence, benefits, limitations and alternatives.
  • Editorial transparency and evidence help readers, although no isolated signal guarantees rankings.

Google began an update to its reviews system on 12 April 2023 and confirmed completion on 25 April. The change was notable because the documentation moved beyond product reviews and covered analysis of other reviewable topics such as services, destinations, media and experiences.

The message for publishers of comparisons, rankings and opinions was clear: a review should not simply rearrange information from other pages. It should demonstrate knowledge and help someone make a decision.

A review is decision content

Readers use reviews to reduce uncertainty. They need to understand which option fits their situation, which differences matter and which limitations could appear after purchase.

A page that merely lists specifications contributes little. A strong review explains its criteria, connects features to needs and separates verifiable facts from opinion.

Demonstrating experience

Google recommends showing experience and expertise through original photographs, measurements, test results, a transparent evaluation method, consistent comparison criteria and evidence supporting the conclusion. The author should also make clear what comes from first-hand use and what comes from documentation or research.

Authority and trust cannot be manufactured by adding an author box or structured data to shallow content. They develop through consistency: who wrote the page, what experience they have, when it was reviewed, which sources support it and how commercial relationships are disclosed.

Compare without inventing a winner

A useful comparison starts by defining needs and criteria such as price, performance, usability, support, durability, integration or total cost. It then explains trade-offs. A more complete platform may be unnecessarily complex for a small company; a cheaper option may create more manual work.

Showing alternatives and situations in which another choice is better makes the content more helpful and credible.

Auditing a review archive

Sites with many reviews should look for templated pages without sufficient analysis, outdated comparisons, copied manufacturer descriptions, rankings with no visible method, unidentified authors and overlapping pages competing for the same intent.

Not every weak page should be deleted. Some need updating, others should be consolidated or redirected. Traffic is only one criterion alongside links, conversions, topical coverage and usefulness to existing customers.

Generative systems also use review pages to find differences, evidence and limitations. Clear structure helps them interpret the content, but citation depends on contributing something verifiable.
